Katzav verdict: A letter to A. of the Tourism Ministry

Dear, A.,

As a father of two daughters who are thank God too young to understand what happened yesterday, I would like to thank you on their behalf. They don’t know it yet, but you have already affected their lives immensely.

Thank you for bringing to light the filthy behaviour of Israeli men in high-ranking positions. Everyone knew about it – in the army, in the Knesset, in the governments – but nothing was ever done. It was a given that women working with these lowlifes will pay the price and keep shtum.

Thank you for having the guts to take on one of the highest ranking officials, Israel’s “number one citizen”, and drag him kicking and screaming  to court for what he did to you. You have shown that there is a glimpse of hope in Israeli society, coming from its judicial system. This is a system that occasionally has given the occupation a hard time – but has ultimately enabled it. There’s a lot of work to be done, but at least now it is starting to come out for women’s rights.

And lastly, thank you for making this place just a tad safer for my two beautiful girls. My girls, of course, are the smartest on this planet and will go on to do great things. But their path might be dotted with lowlifes like Katsav. Putting aside the physical harm I would do to anyone who laid a finger on them, you have shown that they have a certain amount of protection from this state, and you have sent a clear message to the imbeciles who might even think about touching them.

My daughters and I owe you a lot.

Ami

TEST TEST GAL Our team has been devastated by the horrific events of this latest war. The world is reeling from Israel’s unprecedented onslaught on Gaza, inflicting mass devastation and death upon besieged Palestinians, as well as the atrocious attack and kidnappings by Hamas in Israel on October 7. Our hearts are with all the people and communities facing this violence.    We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine. The bloodshed has reached extreme levels of brutality and threatens to engulf the entire region. Emboldened settlers in the West Bank, backed by the army, are seizing the opportunity to intensify their attacks on Palestinians. The most far-right government in Israel’s history is ramping up its policing of dissent, using the cover of war to silence Palestinian citizens and left-wing Jews who object to its policies.   This escalation has a very clear context, one that +972 has spent the past 14 years covering: Israeli society’s growing racism and militarism, entrenched occupation and apartheid, and a normalized siege on Gaza.   We are well positioned to cover this perilous moment – but we need your help to do it. This terrible period will challenge the humanity of all of those working for a better future in this land. Palestinians and Israelis are already organizing and strategizing to put up the fight of their lives.   Can we count on your support? +972 Magazine is a leading media voice of this movement, a desperately needed platform where Palestinian and Israeli journalists, activists, and thinkers can report on and analyze what is happening, guided by humanism, equality, and justice.
